On October 16th, we mark World Anaesthesia Day
MBAL VarnaOn October 16th, we mark World Anaesthesia Day, a date that reminds us of the importance of this crucial medical specialty.
Before, during, and after surgery — by the patient's side at every critical moment.
In 1846, the first general anaesthesia was introduced by William Morton. On October 16, 1846, the first public demonstration of ether anaesthesia was performed at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Since then, anaesthesiology has developed into a complex and vital discipline that ensures patient safety and comfort during surgical procedures.
Anaesthesiology is much more than ensuring a painless surgical procedure. It is a specialty that combines deep medical knowledge, high concentration, precision, and continuous care for the patient's condition.
Every medical specialty is important, but anaesthesiology is the one without which no other can function. The anaesthesiologist is the physician who stabilizes the patient's vital functions using medications and invasive techniques — such as mechanical ventilation, venous and arterial access, cardiac massage, and more. The anaesthesiologist conducts the preoperative assessment and preparation for all patients. During surgery, they induce and maintain anaesthesia while monitoring all vital signs — respiration, cardiac function, hemodynamics, temperature, and laboratory parameters — adjusting them as needed and reanimating the patient if required. After surgery, they wake the patient from anaesthesia, prescribe therapy to support optimal recovery, and mitigate any postoperative risks.
